Airbow By Crosman Is A New Generation of Crossbow

The outdoor industry is an ever expanding universe of possibilities and breakthroughs. 2016 is already seeing one new weapon platform that is likely going to revolutionize how we think about archery in the future.  Already there is a robust debate whether crossbows should be viewed as an archery weapon and this week's topic is only going to muddy that water even further.

Pioneer Airbow

Welcome the Pioneer Airbow by Crosman.  It is part air-gun and part crossbow and the results are mind boggling.  Air is injected into a cylinder at a pressure of 3,000 psi.  At this point, the gun is loaded with a crossbow bolt and cocked with a small lever at the rear of the weapon.  Get this, it shoots at a whopping 450 fps and can shoot 8 bolts on the single load of air.  Just wow!!!

With a compact, lightweight bullpup design, the weapon is very easy to cock or de-cock. It will provide disabled hunters much more accessibility to hunt.  No more worrying about reloading and cocking a crossbow.

Crosman is promoting this in the pre-order phase now for $849.  Being such a revolutionary design, it is not legal in all states to hunt with as of yet.  You can check their website for hunting availability in your state.  They even provide an information packet on the site for you to send to your state congressman to get it legalized if it is not already.

Check out Jim Shockey as he demonstrates the power and precision of this new bow as he takes down a mature Bison.

Upping Your Crossbow Accuracy - Optimizer Speed Dial

In any type of archery weapon, your pins or sighting system makes all the difference between a great shot and one that will not be easily forgotten.  A wounded animal is never the outcome a hunter wants to endure.

Crossbows are a little easier because of the scope.  It is a terrific crossover weapon from rifle to archery.  However, it too can be unforgiving if you are not spot on with your yardages and which reticle line goes with that yardage, even with a range finder.  In a hunting scenario, when big boy steps out and the juices get to pumping, remembering the right line in the scope can become a harry task when your heart feels like it is about to come out of your chest.

Fortunately, there is a product that takes all the guess work out of the equation and right down to each yard at a time.  The Optimizer Speed Dial system makes a crossbow accurate to 80 yards once it is sighted in correctly.  No more holding off between two reticle lines hoping  and praying you are right.  It's dial and shoot with confidence.

The trick is sighting it in at 20 yards, then again at 60.  Once you find the correct number for the correlating tape, the system is set.  You can shoot knowing instead of guessing with devastating accuracy out to 80 yards.  Check out the video below:

Defeating Winter with Base-Layers

There is nothing quite like the misery of a cold winter's day.  It can be brutal. Outdoorsmen go to great lengths to try to preserve their core body temperature.  Heaters, Hot-Hands, and specialty clothing is all in the works when sitting for prolonged periods of time in the grip of cold.

In the clothing to choose from, there is one essential.  It can make all of the difference between being comfortable or real torture.  In the not too distant yesteryear, they were referred to as long-johns or long handles.  In our modern society, we have given them a scientific name - Base-Layer.  It is superior insulation without the bulk of old school layering up.  When hunting and fishing, freedom of movement is at a premium.

In reality, these are not the cotton variety made years ago.  The modern version is truly a thing of sophisticated technology.  With differing weights of material depending on the varying temperatures you may face in the great outdoors, these things feel more like neoprene wet-suits.  They insulate very well while wicking away excess moisture and are worth every penny you will pay for them.

I was truly a skeptic before wearing some.  Trust me, they make a radical difference when facing the elements.

I will tell you that all of these are not made equal.  The more expensive versions are priced the way they are for a reason.  Under Armour is the true leader in this market.  They are also the most expensive.  Boasting Base-Layers for any climate and even offering scent control technology to aid a hunter to defeat the nose of a monster buck.

One note on the Under Armour brand is that they make things to fit super tight which I do not like. The shirt isn't too tight but it's a good idea to get a size larger than you are used to wearing.  The pants are tremendously tight.  When taking a bathroom break from a wheelchair, tight is not what you are looking for.  I recommend to go a couple sizes bigger than your average.

RedHead made by Bass Pro Shops is every bit as good as Under Armour.  On top of this, it is typically about $30 cheaper on average and also offers scent control technology.  And, it doesn't fit as tight as Under Armour.

For some strange reason, I actually enjoy wearing the Under Armour top with the RedHead bottoms.  I am not exactly certain why, but I do.

What I do know is, 1.  I hate being cold and 2.  I like being warm without having the weight and 3.  I like having confidence in the gear I use.  So, whatever works for you, I encourage you to stick with it.  Good luck in your late-season hunting adventures!

Thoughts For A New Year 2016

Welcome to 2016!  I am so eager and excited for this new year and the many adventures that will be upcoming.

I always love a fresh start.  A new beginning.  A fresh chapter.  A new year is just that.  It is time to re-think life and make the changes to become the person God has destined you to be.

Here is my list and I invite you to walk with me on this journey if you will.  Anything worth doing is worth doing with others.

1) Think positively - I do this already but there is always room for improvement.  Lot's of people wonder, "Does thinking positive actually help?"  YES! What is your alternative anyway.  Everyone knows that thinking negatively is terrible for a persons psyche.  Outdoorsmen who have physical limitations already have enough to overcome, so keep your mind, outlook and attitude positive.

2) Exercise daily - I am not advocating becoming the Incredible Hulk but a body in motion stays in motion.  Stay as active as you physically can.

3) Eat healthy - Eating clean is a marvelous thing for your body, mind and heart.  The benefits for shopping in God's grocery store is meat with none of the junk that is injected in the meat at the grocery store.  Fruits, vegetables and nuts are awesome.  Replace refined sugar with all natural items like honey, Stevia and coconut sugar.

4) Work hard - Being passionate about what you put your hand to is important.  As men, we derive who we are by what we do most of the time.  Some would say this is bad but I tend to disagree.  Being known for diligence and working hard is a character quality that will bring you favor regardless of economic landscape around you.  People want people who will give of themselves!

5) Stay strong - This isn't referring to the exercise version.  This is about will power.  Staying strong is a mindset.  It is more of a state of being than anything else.  Being mentally tough will give you an edge over lots of others around you.  In today's society, mental weakness and the quitter mentality is everywhere.  When things get tough...persevere, stick it out, be tough!

6) Worry less - Simply defined, worry is wasting of energy on things that will never happen.  It is the imagination gone wild.  It is the birthplace of fear and will keep you from taking chances. Be smart but don't worry.

7) Pray more - Being a believer is as much a part of me as the skin on my body.  Spending more time with the Creator and His Son and His Spirit is fuel to my soul.  Prayer can happen anywhere - at church, in a boat, in the woods, at work.  A life without God is empty.  I want to be full of life, power and the Spirit of the living God.

8) Be happy - I love this last one.  It is seemingly something not in our control but that is a lie.  Happiness is a state of being that you can choose.  Regardless of what life throws at you, regardless of the circumstances you find yourself in, you and you alone can decide whether you are happy or not.  As Phil Robertson says, "Happy, Happy, Happy!"  People might think that is fake but it ain't!  Phil was saying that long before the Duck Dynasty boom and recent fame.

Well, there ya go!  It's a great list of things we can achieve in 2016. Drop me an email and let me know how you are doing on this.  I will keep you posted from my end on the blog.
